Parishioners to Attend Architecture Seminar

On, Saturday, June 25, Andrew Gould, well-known for his design of several Orthodox churches, will present an overview of the history and development of church architecture at Saint Vladimir’s Seminary. To further their own journey towards the construction of a new temple in Snyder County, Chapel of the Holy Sprit faithful will join Holy Trinity members in taking a weekend retreat to the seminary, attending the daylong seminar and worshipping on campus.

Participants will depart from Holy Trinity at 4 a.m. on Saturday, stopping in Beaverton at 5:15 a.m. before heading to New York. The group will then attend the two-part presentation focusing on traditional Byzantine architecture and its practicality in American culture today, examining church aesthetics, iconography, and furnishings. It culminates with a discussion geared to help attendees devise solutions for designing and decorating an Orthodox church today. The day will end with Vespers, dinner, and fellowship. Before arriving home late Sunday afternoon, the group will also attend the Divine Liturgy together at St. Vladimir’s.

This trip is open to everyone. Holy Trinity will sponsor transportation, registration, and overnight accommodations. Travellers will be responsible for meals, except Saturday lunch, which is included. Register by June 11 by contacting Dn. Alexander.

Volunteers Needed to Return Home to Livable Condition

If the Amish can raise a barn in a day, can the Orthodox re-build a house in a weekend or two?

Shane and Maria Stevens had to gut much of their house because of asbestos. They are asking for volunteers to spend a few hours helping over the next few weeks to rebuild its interior. This weekend, they will be focusing on installing drywall. Contact Shane if you are able to help get the Stevens’ back into their home. Thank you!

Benefit Breakfast to Support Upcoming Mission Trip

Camp Nazareth in Mercer, Pennsylvania is hosting an Orthodox Christian Fellowship (OCF) endorsed Spring College Student Retreat from Friday, May 20 to Sunday, May 22, 2011. There will be guest speakers, group workshops, evening social events, food, fun and plenty of opportunity for faith enrichment. The keynote addresses are being given by Rev. Jonathan Cholcher, Acting Rector of St. John the Baptist OCA Church in Warren, Ohio. In addition to the keynotes, a variety of priests and college students will be presenting and leading discussions on how we “overcome the world” in the areas of relationships, school, politics, the workplace, and in marriage and family. You do not want to miss out on this retreat. It promises to be a very rewarding event. Come to the retreat, meet other Orthodox college students, form lasting friendships, have some fun, and deepen your faith.

Congratulations, Graduates

Join us in celebrating the achievements of our graduates this month. Nicholas Reeves will receive a Doctorate in Music Ed. from the Manhattan School of Music and Willis (Mark) Mwangola will receive a Masters degree from Penn State. Also graduating from Penn State with a Bachelor’s degree are Lara Haluszczak, Marina Johnson, Samuel Leathers, Stasia Roberts, and Shane Stevens. Many years!

 

My First Update

Kristo amefufuka!  Christ is risen!

Photo credit: ocmc.orgI am writing to you from Denver, where I am currently doing a week of language training (learning Kiswahili!) before my departure to Tanzania at the end of this month!

It has been a long process; but thanks be to God, with your help, I have built a fantastic support team and am fully funded/pledged for two years of missionary service as a nurse in Bukoba, Tanzania!

My last day of work was April 1, and since then I have been to Florida for my pre-field training at OCMC headquarters, packed up and moved out of my apartment in DC, and enjoyed Holy Week and Pascha at home in State College, PA with my parents. For Bright Week I travelled out to Calistoga, CA to visit my sister at Holy Assumption Monastery, and then to the LA area to visit with my brother. I also had the opportunity to visit Saint Barbara’s monastery while staying in Santa Paula. Following this week in Denver, I will return to State College for a few days. Then, I will be in Kansas City to attend a medical missions conference for short and long term missionaries. This leads me to my next big announcement…

On Sunday, May 22 at 5 p.m., I will be officially commissioned as a long-term missionary with OCMC! If you are in the DC area (or are willing to travel) I invite you to attend Great Vespers at St. Sophia’s Orthodox Cathedral in Washington, DC. The commissioning will follow the Vespers service, and will be held in conjunction with the annual DC area OCMC benefit banquet.

If you would like to attend the banquet, information is available on the OCMC website. You don’t have to attend the benefit to come and pray with and for me, though! I would love to see all of you before I leave!

I’m so grateful to all of you who have been praying for me, and to those of you who are pledging to support me or have donated to help send me to Africa! I am so eager to finally be on my way and to begin sharing Christ’s love and salvation with people in Africa! It’s also very exciting to know that soon I will be using my skills as a nurse to minister to the physical needs of people in Bukoba and in the surrounding areas. I can’t wait to start sharing the details with all of you!

May you enjoy a blessed Paschal (Easter) season, and please be in touch! I hope to see as many of you as possible in DC on May 22!

New Arrival at Holy Trinity

We are pleased to announce the arrival of Heidi Elizabeth Wagner, newborn daughter of Andre and Megan Wagner! She was born April 30 at 1:22 p.m., weighing 7 lbs., 2 oz., and measuring 17.5 inches tall. Many years!
