Holy Trinity Orthodox Church

LEWISBURG – Orthodox Christian bioethicist and physcian Dr. Tristram Engelhardt will speak on “Bioethics after Christendom” at Bucknell University on Friday, September 9 at 4 p.m. in Trout Auditorium, with discussion afterward.

In his talk, Engelhardt will explore ethical concerns in health care and western culture from a distinctly Orthodox Christian point of view. His visit through our region is being sponsored by the Diocese of Eastern Pennsylvania (Orthodox Church in America); the Orthodox Christian Fellowship at Bucknell is one of the lecture’s co-sponsors.

Dr. Engelhardt (who is both a Ph.D. and an M.D.) is a professor of philosophy at Rice and emeritus of medicine at Baylor. He is also the senior editor of the Journal of Medicine and Philosophy, Christian Bioethics, among others. Perhaps his most notable work is entitled “Foundations of Bioethics” (Oxford), which was reviewed by The New England Journal of Medicine as “one of the most brilliant books to appear in the field.”

The talk will be followed by a time of discussion.

The Reader’s Workshop originally scheduled for this Saturday (September 10) at 4 p.m. has been postponed to a later date because of the afternoon scheduling of the Penn State-Alabama game. More information to follow.

You’re Invited: This Thursday (September 8) from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Holy Trinity will hold its annual social for anyone new to our community or looking to become more involved in parish life. This enjoyable evening features brief presentations about our community, its ministries, outreaches, and fellowship groups, giving you an opportunity to meet and interact with our various lay and clergy leaders, and learn how to become involved. Get a taste of what Orthodox Christian Fellowship is all about–literally! All Penn State undergraduates and graduate students are invited to attend a free “welcome” dinner at 6 p.m. on Thursday, August 25 at 212 Pasquerilla Center. We’ll have a sampling of take-out food from our favorite State College restaurants while we share the various events planned for the semester. Then we will walk to the Creamery afterwards. Bring a friend or roommate.

Our parish is growing and we need teachers! We would like to add an additional elementary class to provide better age-appropriate instruction for our children.  Please prayerfully consider becoming a part of the Sunday School staff, and if you are interested, contact Deacon Mark. There will be a teacher kick-off meeting for all new and returning teachers this Saturday (August 27) at 5 p.m. in the Parish Hall.

Please remember our Back-to-School Drive. Some of the items requested are backpacks, Crayola crayons (24-pack or smaller), glue sticks, magic markers, wooden pencils, mechanical pencils & lead, dry-erase markers, and three- or five-subject and spiral notebooks. Monetary donations are also appreciated as we purchase any outstanding items for our 40+ sponsored children. Please bring your contributions to church by this Sunday, August 21. This Thursday is the deadline for parents to register their children for two summer youth retreats. Elementary and middle-school-aged kids will attend this year’s Archdiocesan Youth Retreat, “Icons: Windows to Heaven,” taking place on Thursday the 18th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Pittsburgh; high school students will depart on an overnight camping excursion with the Orthodox Youth Association the next evening. Both events are free and will include prayer services, presentations, meals, and plenty of fun and fellowship. Holy Trinity will provide group transportation to both outings. At a special called meeting of the parish yesterday, Holy Trinity voting members authorized the Parish Council to purchase a half-acre tract of land in Beavertown to be used by the Chapel of the Holy Spirit.
